A mainland man had his Labor Day sight seeing plans cut short yesterday after police stopped him for driving his electric tricycle on a busy expressway.

The 29-year-old man surnamed Gao was spotted by many confused motorists, with some posting dash cam videos and photographs of him riding the trike at a glacial pace on the Tolo Highway — where the maximum speed is 100 kilometers per hour — just before 2pm.

According to on.cc, he tried to enter Lion Rock Tunnel at around 4pm, but was stopped by toll booth staff, who then called the police.

He was then taken to Kowloon City Police station, but was let go with a warning. The case was classed as “seeking police assistance.”

Gao — who is originally from Hebei province but now lives in Shenzhen — is disabled as a result of an injury to his right leg years ago.

He told reporters that he bought the three-wheeler through Chinese online shopping site Taobao six months ago, and that the trike has the relevant disability permits from mainland authorities.

He told on.cc that he planned on spending two days in Hong Kong, arrived in the city via Futian Port near Lok Ma Chau MTR at around 10am yesterday, and was heading towards the Hong Kong Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai to do some sight-seeing.

Contrary to suggestions by netizens that maybe he wanted to play Mario Kart in real life, Gao threw no turtle shells and dropped no banana skins.

He told the website that he originally planned on taking the MTR to Wan Chai, but station staff said his electric tricycle was not allowed. He also tried to take it onto a bus but was turned away.

Armed with nothing but a map, Gao hit the road with his tricycle and set off on his long journey.

According to Apple Daily, the electric tricycle cost under HK$4,940 (US$630) on Taobao, its maximum speed is 30 kilometers per hour, and can travel 40 kilometers if fully-charged. According to Google Maps, the distance between Lok Ma Chau to Wan Chai is just over 40 kilometeres so he would have just about made it.

We don’t know how Gao spent to rest of his labor day or even if he made it to Wan Chai, but one person did manage to grab a photo with him along the Tsim Sha Tsui waterfront.
