Police charge Indonesian woman arrested for abandoning human fetus

A 33-year-old Indonesian woman has been charged after police arrested her for abandoning a human fetus in a public toilet in an indoor wet market in North Point.

Ming Pao reports that the woman, who was only identified as Suwasti, was charged with concealing the birth of a child and for attempting to induce a miscarriage at Eastern Magistrates’ Court today.

She was was arrested at an apartment unit in Tseung Kwan O on Monday weeks after cleaners and plumbers at the indoor wet market in North Point found the abandoned fetus blocking a toilet drain.

A statement read in the court room alleges that Suwasti attempted to induce an abortion at around 2:30pm on November 5 by using poisons and other harmful substances.

According to on.cc, the prosecution also told the court that the defendant was working as a domestic helper, but was dismissed by her employer following the incident.

According to the Offences Against the Person Ordinance, concealing the birth of a child can land you up to two years in prison, and attempting to induce your own abortion can land you a fine and up to seven years in jail.

The defendant is not expected to enter a plea yet, and the case has been adjourned until January 10.
