An Indonesian domestic worker was killed this morning by a falling tree branch which struck the 48-year-old as she walked with her employer in Sau Mau Ping.

A police spokesperson said the victim was “passing by” with her 51-year-old employer, surnamed Wong, when the tragedy happened near a bus stop outside Shun Lee estate’s Lee Hang House about 7:30am.

“They were just passing by. When they arrived at the above location, the tree branch, about 4.5 meters tall, fell,” they said, adding the branch’s diameter was about 4 inches.

“The tree branch hit (the woman) and she was taken to United Christian Hospital in an unconscious state and later certified dead.”

A spokesperson from the Fire Services Department said firefighters also attended the scene and cut down an additional few branches which they “found dangerous.”

Kwun Tong District Councillor Choy Chak-hung,  who oversees the management of Shun Lee Estate, told the SCMP he had long held concerns about that particular tree.

He said the estate office two weeks ago had requested the Housing Department prune the trees in the area, a process which had started but not reached the tree in question, according to the newspaper.
