Hoping to catch culprit, taxi driver uploads video of sneaky bag snatch

She was wearing pink and caught red-handed. Well, caught on film at least.

Police are hunting a woman who was filmed stealing a bag from a taxi during a 20-minute ride between Sham Shui Po and Tsuen Wan last week.

The bag, which belonged to the driver of the cab, was, in an oversight, left in the back seat when the cabbie picked up the female fare from the corner of Un Chau and Nam Cheong Street in Sham Shui Po on Thursday afternoon, according to Apple Daily.

After dropping the woman off, Lam went to buy some car parts and soon realized his bag was missing.

Though suspicion didn’t immediately fall upon the female customer — the driver thought he may have dropped the bag while helping load bags into the taxi — a check of video footage from a camera inside the cab revealed a seemingly sly snatch.

After discovering the bag behind her, the woman picks it up and briefly puts it on the seat next to her before using her own bag to shield it from view. Had it been a bag left behind by a forgetful passenger, as we suspect she likely thought, she may have even gotten away with.

The bag contained about HK$9,000 (US$1,150), the driver’s taxi registration, and a Buddha amulet that he has had for 20 years that was given to him by his mother to keep him safe.

After reporting the missing bag to the police, the driver, surnamed Lam, then went through the footage and posted a short clip of the snatch in action on Facebook.

The newspaper reports that police have not yet found the woman in pink.
