Police have issued a warning to Hongkongers about a “toothpick crossbow” which has been made wildly popular in China.

The crossbow is designed to shoot toothpicks, but can be used to propel metal nails or needles for up to 20 meters. The handheld toy weapon, which manufacturers have reportedly targeted towards children, has become the latest craze in Chinese primary and middle schools, Shanghai Daily reports.

Now, Hong Kong police are warning locals not to purchase the toys, saying that they would show “zero tolerance” to those committing any illegal acts (and yes, that probably includes children).

We’re sorry about all the bad things we’ve ever said about fidget spinners — can we reinstate those as the toy du jour again?

Video clips of people testing the mini crossbows online have shown them firing needles, nails and toothpicks at a force strong enough to puncture cardboard and soft drink cans (which means they can most likely put out your eye, too).

While it is not clear whether the toys are on shelves in Hong Kong yet, they are being widely sold by independent sellers on online retailers like Taobao and JD.

Under the Public Order Ordinance, those convicted of possessing offensive weapons in public places are liable to three years’ imprisonment. Under the Summary Offences Ordinance, possession of offensive weapons with intent bears a maximum punishment of a HKD5,000 fine or two years’ imprisonment.
