Parents of a one-year-old boy are desperately seeking a liver donor for their baby after he fell critically ill over the weekend and slipped into a coma.

The mother told Stand News that her brother-in-law, who was a preliminary match, was found Monday evening to be an unsuitable donor due to fatty liver.

Fourteen-month-old Hayson Au developed a fever and began vomiting on Friday, and showed no signs of improving after his parents brought him to see a doctor.

On Sunday, he was diagnosed with acute liver failure. His condition deteriorated rapidly and he was comatose by noon.

Au is now in Queen Mary Hospital, where he is awaiting a suitable donor. After his father’s brother was found to be incompatible, a 34-year-old woman rushed to the hospital at around 2 am Tuesday, expressing her willingness to donate part of her liver.

Doctors are assessing whether she would be an appropriate candidate.

“[My son]’s liver is barely functioning,” his mother told Stand News. Neither she nor her husband would be suitable donors because she has fatty liver and his blood type is not compatible.

She said that a number of people contacted her after seeing media reports about her son’s case and said they would be prepared to donate. But due to factors including the long post-surgery recovery period of three weeks, as well as needing the approval of their family members, only three—including the 34-year-old woman—ultimately indicated willingness.

Donors must have A+ or O blood type, be in good health condition and aged between 18 and 60 years old. Au’s mother can be reached via WhatsApp at 9703 3318.
