Hong Kong netizens raise HKD170,000 for severely beaten dog

A Facebook group formed to help a stray dog suspected to have been severely beaten and left for dead in Yuen Long has raised almost HKD170,000 for the poor pup.

Photos of the dog, bloody and battered, first appeared on Facebook on Friday evening, prompting volunteers to create a group to raise money for the dog’s medical costs, reports Oriental Daily.

The group now has over 3,500 members, and donors have given a total of HKD167,652.

After donations had reached HKD150,000, a post in the Facebook group asked people to stop sending money.

The money will be spent on three different surgeries.

According to the group description, someone found the dog, now dubbed “Barry”, in a village in near Long Ping. Local residents had said they heard a dog crying in the night, but they had assumed that it was a neighbour’s dog.

Based on blood trails found at the scene, volunteers believe that the dog was beaten by a man with stick, and that the dog had been chased to a second location, where the man continued to beat him.

One person posted a photo of the alleged “suspect”.

The dog sustained serious injuries, including multiple fractures, and is currently the care of a vet.
