The trial of a man charged with attempted murder for slitting his wife’s wrist as she slept began on Monday at the High Court.

Yiu Shun-ching, a 40-year-old accountant, pleaded guilty to the offense, which is punishable by life imprisonment.

In May 2018, Yiu allegedly struck his wife, surnamed Leung, in the back of her head three times with a hard object after slitting her wrist while she was slept. She later fell into a coma and was sent to the hospital after Yiu reported the incident to the police.

The attack has left Leung with permanent nerve damage in her left hand.

In mitigation, the defense said Yiu, who was first diagnosed with depression in 2016, committed the crime under the influence of alcohol, and over suspicions that his wife was a drug user.

Yiu’s lawyer said that the relations between Yiu and Leung had “suffered a downturn” after Leung lashed out at Yiu verbally for stealing a strand of her hair to be tested for drugs.

Prior to Yiu’s arrest, the couple lived in Sha Tin with their two daughters.

The trial is set to resume in April.
