A 34-year-old man, who allegedly hacked his elderly mother to death before attempting to commit suicide, has been charged with murder.
The man was arrested on October 8 after residents discovered him on the ground beneath the 16th floor flat he shared with his 77-year-old wheelchair-bound mother in Kwai Chung.
If you’re wondering how the man could have survived a 16-story plunge, police have suggested the fall was broken by tree branches below, according to the SCMP.
It was alleged by police he had hacked his mother to death, almost decapitating her, before leaping from the building.
According to RTHK, the man was arrested on Saturday and has been charged with murder. The case will be addressed today at West Kowloon Magistrates’ Court.
At the time of his arrest, a district councillor, Rayman Chow from the Neighbourhood & Worker’s Service Centre, said the man had resigned as a social worker several years ago to care for his mother, RTHK reported.
Police said the family had two domestic helpers but they had taken the day off when the incident occurred.
