Sweat, Baby, Sweat: Hong Kong just had the second hottest June on record after 2015

Anyone who ventured away from air conditioning for oh, say, two seconds in the last month probably noticed that it was really hot. Positively sweltering, you might say.

According to the Hong Kong Observatory, this June was the second-hottest that the city’s experienced since records began in 1884. (In case you’re wondering, the hottest June ever was in 2015. Because climate change. Probably.)

The mean daily temperature was 29.4 degrees Celsius, which is 1.5 degrees above average, while the maximum temperature throughout the month was 32.4 degrees, the highest ever recorded for June.

Meanwhile, the average minimum temperature for the month was 27.5 degrees, which is the second highest minimum temperature recorded for any June.

A nine-day heatwave began on the 19th, due to a subtropical ridge which brought fine, sunny weather with mild winds to the region. The maximum temperatures for June 24 to 27 were all over 35 degrees, which broke a 131-year record.

The hottest day of the month was June 25, with temperatures reaching a scorching 35.5 degrees. (Thanks, subtropical ridge, for making that happen on a weekend.)

We personally experienced quite a few instances of sweating before we’d even dried off from a shower, so that’s fun.

Despite a few thundery showers during the first half of the month, rainfall was actually 24 percent below average last month.
