Hong Kong beer race canceled after backlash from doctors and media

Earlier this month, we wrote about a 1,600-meter “beer run” that was set to take place in Hong Kong as part of a “Beer x Run” event this November. At the time, the plans for this event surprised us not because of the alcoholic component, but because Hongkongers are so averse to sports.

Following backlash from the city’s medical community and media outlets, the run’s organizers, RunOurCity, said on August 4 that contestants would not be provided with alcoholic drinks during the run, and that the “mechanism of the event” would be rearranged.

Unfortunately for those who were looking forward to participating in the chunder run (or watching it from a safe, splash-free distance), it was reported by HK01 today that the run has been officially canceled, and will be replaced by a Halloween run instead.

At the time of writing, it’s not clear whether the rest of the event’s activities, such as beer yoga (we are still not sure how that works) and beer games, will still go forward.

Further details will be announced by RunOurCity tomorrow, but those who have paid to enter the individual or group races — which cost HKD348 and HKD1,200, respectively — will be refunded.

While some may mourn the cancellation of the event, it seems like a simple enough sport to recreate among friends with the help of Club 7-Eleven, so we can’t say we’re totally heartbroken.
