Homeless man who raped and beat to death Hong Kong chef jailed for 33 years in Melbourne

A homeless man who raped and beat to death a young Hong Kong pastry chef in Melbourne has been sentenced to 33 years behind bars.

Scott Miller, 42, had been thrown out of a bar in the Australian city for being too drunk and harassing women when he came across Renea Lau, 32, on her way to work in June last year.

He chased her, beat her unconscious, stripped her naked and raped her before leaving her for dead in a park.

According to ABC News, several passersby saw the rape but did not intervene as they thought they were having consensual sex.

Justice Betty King told the Victorian Supreme court during sentencing on Friday that Renea had died in the most evil and sadistic manner, and that Miller’s actions were “every woman’s and every parent’s worst nightmare”.

Lau’s family, who travelled to Australia from Hong Kong to be at the hearings, said outside the court, “We all love Renea and miss her forever.”

Miller, who reportedly has a history of untreated mental illness, will serve at least 28 years for the murder.
