While it may feel like Hong Kong’s getting more and more expensive by the day what with taxi fares, Airport Express prices, and Ocean Park tickets all having gone up in recent memory, it seems that the old Fragrant Harbour still has a few discounts up its sleeve.

Earlier today, local budget airline HK Express announced that it would be holding a week-long “spring mega sale”, with single flights to 21 different locations starting at HKD8. No, we’re not missing a zero. They’re really starting at eight dollars… before factoring in other costs like fuel surcharges, government imposed taxes, and other fees, of course. So no, you won’t be able to get change back from a HKD10 bill, but it’s still pretty good.

The destinations for these cut-price tickets will change every day that the sale is on. For the first day, HK Express listed over 2,300 tickets to Tokyo (Narita), Kagoshima, and Jeju. We had a quick peek on the airline’s website, and while we appreciate that it’s pretty late in the day (relatively speaking) so most tickets were in the low-to-mid hundreds, we did spot one HKD8 ticket to Kagoshima.

Obviously, there are restrictions — for starters, there’s a specified travel period (May 9, 2017 to March 24, 2018, FYI), the HKD8 price applies to one-way tickets only, and passengers travelling on discounted tickets won’t receive inflight meals or be able to check baggage into the hold. (To be fair, the latter two aren’t exactly necessities, considering that HK Express only has short-haul flights which are perfect for luggage-lite weekend breaks.)

Despite all these catches, you can still get away with paying peanuts in comparison to regular fares. Basically, it means that for one week only, regular schmoes like us can get somewhere at the massively cut prices that airline staff and their friends and family can enjoy when they fly standby all year round. While we don’t know which flight routes will be next available in the sale, HK Express only flies to 26 locations from Chek Lap Kok (25, if you count both Tokyo airports as one), so it’s safe to say that a good chunk of its destinations will be covered.

Destinations will be updated on HK Express’ website daily.
