Grandmother who died in minibus crash saves 3 through organ donations

The fifth person to die from last week’s minibus crash, 55-year-old grandmother Cheng Chui-lin, has given hope to three ailing Hongkongers.

Cheng, whose three-month-old granddaughter was killed instantly in the crash, passed away in Tuen Mun hospital on Monday afternoon after suffering from internal bleeding. Her daughter, 24-year-old Hong Kong footballer Gigi Tang, remains in critical condition.

Cheng’s grieving relatives reportedly agreed to donate the 55-year-old’s organs to medicine, and her liver, kidneys and corneas have been deemed suitable for donation.

Apple Daily reports that Cheng’s liver was transplanted into a middle-aged woman suffering from liver cancer yesterday, and the hospital has apparently arranged for each of Cheng’s kidneys to go towards two kidney cancer patients.

Inspired by the generosity of Cheng’s family, residents of Wong Toi Village in Pat Heung have worked together to provide a relief fund for the families affected by the crash.

The minibus crash, which occurred last Friday in Yuen Long, claimed the lives of five people and injured a further 13. The collision happened when 70-year-old truck driver Cheung Man-leung ran a red light, causing the minibus to crash into his cargo truck and flip on its side.

Cheung has been denied bail and charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death. He was not asked to enter a plea. The case has been adjourned until Feb. 16, 2016, to allow time for DNA reports and autopsy results to be released.
