Eight public housing flats with an unsavory past are among the units available for rent in an express scheme run by the Housing Authority, selection of which begins Friday.
Located in Kowloon and the New Territories, the flats have seen everything from fatal stabbings to suffocation to arson causing death.
In a Kwai Chung Estate flat, a stressed out mother allegedly drugged and strangled her 21-year-old intellectually disabled son in Sept. 2020. Three years ago in a Choi Wan (II) Estate unit, a man was allegedly knifed by his girlfriend during a dispute.

The units are part of the Housing Authority’s Express Flat Allocation Scheme (EFAS), which allows individuals and families who have waited years for public housing to apply for a flat.
Around 1,400 flats are offered under the scheme. Aside for the eight “haunted” units, many others have records of “natural death” and “suicidal/accidental death” incidents, according to the Housing Authority’s list.
Some—but not all—of the flats come with rent reduction periods. Not factoring in the discounts, monthly rent for the eight units range from HK$1,236 (US$158) to HK$3,606 (US$463).
The Housing Authority has received around 60,800 applications for the scheme.
