‘F&B workers are people too’: Tuen Mun cafe owner issues 5 commandments to rude customers

A notice put up by the owner of Cafe Heato in Tuen Mun listing out five commandments for customers went viral over the weekend after being posted on the eatery’s Facebook page. As of press time, the post has almost 5,000 ‘reactions’ and over 1,300 shares.

The list urged customers to take note of the following:

Please don’t hurry us, because we’re not a fast food shop – but a coffee shop.

If you’re in a rush, please say so early on. We’re hoping for you to come in and take some time for yourself – and not just to fill your tummy.

We have coffee, breakfast, spaghetti, bread; [we] don’t have milk tea, lemon tea, lemon water, Ovaltine, Coke, or anything of the like. Because we are a coffee shop!

If [we are] late opening or not open, perhaps the owner is tired, or the staff couldn’t get out of bed. You can check our Facebook page.

Those who work in F&B are people too, and staff have their own stories. Please respect us, otherwise I, the owner, will be angry!

The owner, 27-year-old Amen, told Apple Daily that a customer who complained about the lack of milk tea in the cafe – and who later brought in a cup bought elsewhere – inspired him to pen the five commandments.

He says he “doesn’t wish to go against his ideals” for the sake of making a small sum of money, and also stated that it’s important to create a happy working environment.

Netizens have praised the owner for posting the notice. One says, “It’s important to be clear about your intentions and goals… Those people are not your target audience – let them go to a cha chaan teng.”
