Around 400 commuters were delayed during the morning rush hour today after a faulty MTR train was detected near Mong Kok Station.

The incident occurred at around 7:40am, during peak travel time. One man, surnamed Lee, told Oriental Daily that he and the other passengers on a Tsuen Wan Line train were asked to disembark at Mong Kok Station for unspecified reasons. “They never explain why… it’s always been like this. [The MTR] is always like this,” he said.

After all 400-odd passengers had evacuated the vehicle, Lee sad MTR staff announced that the train would not be in service. Normal train services resumed at around 8am.

The MTR Corporation later confirmed and apologized on social media and confirmed that service on the Tsuen Wan Line had been affected between 7:44am and 8am due to “an equipment fault on train”. A delay certificate has been issued.

While the MTR’s international reputation is one of efficiency and cleanliness (even winning a major contract to help operate the notoriously unpopular and unpunctual South West Rail in England), the rail giant has drawn criticism at home for increasingly frequent delays and power cuts amid rising prices. Last month, a 4.5 hour glitch on the East Rail saw 110 passengers — including a wheelchair-bound grandpa — forced to disembark a train and make their way to the closest platform by walking (or rolling) on the tracks.
