Elderly woman arrested on suspicion of murdering husband in his sleep

An elderly woman has been arrested on suspicion of butchering her husband to death while he was asleep in their Thursday morning.

The 73-year-old woman is believed to have used a meat cleaver from the kitchen to strike her husband’s head at around 4:20am at their home in Lai Yiu Estate, Kwai Chung.

Police received a call from the couple’s daughter, and upon arrival at the apartment, saw that the man, 69, was bleeding from his head.

Medical personnel administered emergency first aid and rushed the victim to Princess Margaret Hospital. He lost consciousness on the way there and was declared dead at the hospital around 5:40am.

Chief Inspector Wong Sun-lok, from the Kwai Tsing district crime squad, said during a news conference that the man suffered six gashes to his head, and that blood stains were found on the cleaver.

According to the authorities’ initial investigation, his wife has battled schizophrenia and depression for more than 10 years. She regularly attends psychiatric appointments at a hospital and takes medication for her illness.
