‘Drunk’ man allegedly threatens pedestrians with pole on Hollywood Road

Earlier today, a Western man reportedly threatened pedestrians and tourists visiting Sheung Wan’s famed Hollywood Road with a pole while apparently under the influence of alcohol.

The incident took place at around 3pm, outside an antique store next to Man Mo Temple. A witness surnamed Wong, who lives on Hollywood Road, told Coconuts Hong Kong that he heard a loud crash coming from one of the shops just before he headed out for coffee.

“I heard [the crash] all the way from my apartment, and I live on the 15th floor!”

“I looked outside and there was a man standing in front of [Yue Po Chai Curios Store] … he had picked up a long stick from the ground and was waving it around,” Wong said. “He looked drunk, and like he was trying to hit somebody on the other side of the road. Another person was trying to stop him by holding him back.”

When Wong returned from buying his coffee, he says he saw paramedics putting the man on a stretcher, to his apparent distress. “He was crying and looked really upset.”

A Coconuts Hong Kong reporter visiting the scene at 3:10pm found that the antique store had been cordoned off by police officers. There were three police vehicles and one ambulance present, and a large pile of bamboo poles on the ground in front of the neighbouring Man Mo Temple.

This story is developing.
