The driver behind a 2019 bus crash in Fanling that killed six people pled guilty in court Monday, apologizing to the victims and victims’ families over the fatal tragedy.

Man Chi-Kwong, 56, will be handed his sentence in court on Apr. 28. He will remain in detention in the meantime, Stand News reported.

The deadly accident on Fanling Highway Dec. 18, 2019, left six people dead and 38 people injured. Two of the passengers who died were thrown out out of the double decker as the impact of the crash ripped the top of the bus open.

In court Monday, Man said that he “froze” while driving and was unable to react quickly enough, causing the crash. He pled guilty to one count of dangerous driving causing death and one count of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.

According to local media, the bus—traveling on route 978 from Wan Chai to Fanling—rammed into a roadside barrier before hitting a tree around 4:15 pm that day.

Upper deck seats near the front of the bus were dislodged and the windscreen smashed, pictures of the scene showed.

Man had been a driver for the Kowloon Motor Bus company for 18 years, and had just one case of careless driving on record for which he was fined HK$800 (US$103), according to Stand News.
