A driver was left emotional Saturday night after a cow that he had knocked down with his vehicle in Sai Kung died from critical injuries.

Sai Kung Cattle’s Angel (SKCA) said it received a call from district police just before 10pm that a cow had been hit by a car on Hoi Ha Road. The cow was bleeding severely by the time volunteers with SKCA and Sai Kung Buffalo Watch (SKBW), another cattle welfare group, arrived.

The volunteers comforted the cow as the driver cried and expressed his remorse, according to SKCA.

Around an hour and a half later, the cow took its last breaths and died.

“The driver was in tears and stated he swerved to avoid [the cow], but still tragedy happened,” SKBW said on Facebook.

The group added that the cow was an “older bull” and that authorities have had its records since 2014.

The Agriculture Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said the cow was found dead upon arrival of personnel, and that a relevant department was informed for disposal of the carcass.

Roadkills involving cows have been reported before in Sai Kung, which is home to herds of wild cattle in Hong Kong.

In 2019, a taxi driver struck a calf while speeding along Pak Tam Road. The calf was reportedly crossing the road with at least 10 other cows at the time it was hit. The impact of the crash killed the calf, and the taxi lost one of its headlights in the collision.
