Dengue cases now at 27, as CHP announces another person infected

Another case of dengue, another chance to run a picture of a mosquito on someone’s skin.

The city’s record-breaking spread of the mosquito-borne virus, which began emerging earlier this month, is now at 27.

The latest case: a 47-year-old woman who lives in Wong Tai Sin and had recently visited Lion Rock Park — a suspect source of infection which has been temporarily closed after the outbreak.

The woman, according to the Centre for Health Protection (CHP), had an underlying illnesses but is stable after being treated in hospital. She had since been released.

As well as Lion Rock Park, authorities have also pointed to Cheung Chau island as a suspected source of infection for the virus.

A committee overseeing the response to the outbreak, which has included spraying trouble spots, met yesterday to discuss the situation.

After the meeting, CHP’s Wong Ka-hing said guarding against a secondary spread of dengue fever was “ very important” given scientific studies show infected people can transmit the virus to mosquitos through mosquito bites.

As such, he appealed for people who had been to either Cheung Chau or Lion Rock Park to apply mosquito repellent for at least two weeks after their visit.

Dengue symptoms include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting, swollen lymph nodes and rash.

If you’re experiencing any of these, seek out medical treatment.
