Controversial activist Nakade Hitsujiko was arrested this morning after he was found to have an “offensive weapon” near the West Kowloon Cultural District, a few hours before Xi Jinping was scheduled visit the site.

Hitsujiko was stopped by police at 10am at the junction of Nga Cheung Road and Austin Road West, near the Western Harbour Crossing Toll Plaza. A search of his backpack yielded a box cutter, a pair of scissors, cables, and what appeared to be a remote control for a drone, Oriental Daily reports. However, no drone was found.

After initial investigation, police arrested Hitsujiko for the possession of an offensive weapon in a public place. He is currently in being detained at Tsim Sha Tsui police station for questioning. The case is being investigated by the Yau Tsim Regional Crime Unit.

President Xi arrived at the construction site of West Kowloon Cultural District at around 4pm in a bulletproof limo, surrounded by a police motorcade, TVB reports.

A large amount of police officers were deployed for security and helicopters circled above the site while marine police patrolled the surrounding waters.

Hitsujiko, formerly named Chung Ming-lun, is an outspoken pro-independence localist known for his unorthodox ideas, such as employing “bikini-clad ladies” to counter Mong Kok’s square-dancing aunties. The long-haired IT specialist ran in a District Council election in 2015 and lost by a landslide, shortly after which he was arrested for links to a HKD2.17 million money-laundering case.
