Carlsberg’s ‘Kung Fu Rugby Team’ looks absolutely nothing like advertised

The team in the advertisement is pictured above and the actual team is shown below.

You probably saw Carlsberg’s somewhat confusing “Probably the best kung fu rugby team in the world” ads around Hong Kong the past couple weeks.

First, we wondered what the hell kung fu rugby was.

Secondly, we asked ourselves if there existed more than one kung fu rugby team in the world.

Thirdly, when was Carlsberg going to reveal the team and where did they find such good-looking rugby kung fu masters?

Today Carlsberg finally revealed the team during a press conference at the Hong Kong Stadium, and to our surprise… the team looked absolutely nothing like the men featured in the ad.

In fact, while the ads featured six chiseled Caucasian men and a lone, handsome, East Asian fellow, the team appears to be entirely Chinese.

According to the press release, Carlsberg assembled “an elite group of martial artists”, coached by “legendary Kung Fu star Yeung Pan-pan”. Also joining the team is non-elite-martial-artist actor/singer Fred Cheng.

Was their actual kung fu rugby team not good-looking (or white) enough for Carlsberg?

Neither Carlsberg nor their PR agency has returned our request for comment.
