Canadian English teacher charged with indecent assault of 2 kindergarteners

A Canadian English teacher has been charged with molesting two 6-year-old girls at a kindergarten in Cheung Sha Wan.

Fifty-six-year-old Johnson Robert Scott appeared at Kowloon Magistrates’ Court this morning charged with two counts of indecent assault following his arrest in Sham Shui Po on Friday evening.

RTHK reports that the alleged assault took place on Friday in a classroom at the school where the defendant had taught English for three years, RTHK reports.

Per a report in Apple Daily, teachers at the kindergarten called police at about 5pm on Friday, saying they had noticed “unusual behavior” from Scott and the two girls.

The newspaper reported that he only teaches at the school once a week, and that Friday was the last day of his teaching contract.

According to a court report from Ming Pao, a lawyer representing the defendant said his client is a Canadian national and a Hong Kong permanent resident who first came to Hong Kong in 2001 to teach English.

The defense added that Scott has a wife living in the Philippines, the couple have no children, and that the defendant was earning HK$26,000 (US$3,310) a month.

The prosecution, meanwhile, has requested more time to gather information, including searching the defendant’s cell phone for incriminating evidence, and investigating if there are other possible victims.

The defendant was granted bail of HK$5,000 (US$637), and is not allowed to leave Hong Kong, must report to Tsuen Wan police station every week, and is not allowed to go near the kindergarten or contact any of the prosecution witnesses, HK01 reports.

The case was adjourned until Aug. 27.
