Police received a report about a gun-toting man wearing only his boxers lurking at the fire escape staircase of his building Tuesday evening—only to realize that it was a false alarm.

A security guard at Kwai Yung Court in Kwai Chung, used partly as disciplined service quarters for police, alerted authorities about the man’s suspicious behavior around 6:20 pm.

A large number of police officers arrived at the scene, and upon investigation, found that the man—a cop—was believed to have been testing out a malfunctioning air gun. He took the gun out of his apartment and to the fire escape corridor in order not to disturb his family members, according to a police statement.

Online, a photo circulated of a man walking in an apartment’s fire escape area wearing nothing but a pair of light-colored boxers and sandals. He is holding what appears to be a gun in his right hand.

The incident was classified as a “request for police investigation.” Nobody was arrested.
