Oh shit. Literally.

Sewage has been leaking into the sea near Deep Water Bay and Shek O after damage to pipes by typhoon Mangkhut last Sunday, authorities have announced.

In a statement yesterday, the government warned residents to steer clear of swimming, fishing and water sports in those areas.

With three pipes — near Mills & Chung Path, Deep Water Bay Barbecue Area and Shek O’s Tai Tau Chau — damaged and leaking sewage — authorities have closed five beaches: Kiu Tsui Beach, Trio Beach, Hap Mun Bay Beach, Deep Water Bay Beach and Shek O Beach.

Emergency repairs have been arranged though it may take as long as three weeks to repair or replace all the damaged pipes.

The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) also announced that pipes and secondary treatment facilities at the Sai Kung Sewage Treatment Works had also been damaged, reducing the capacity of the plant to process waste.

Despite emergency repairs, a full fix will take “some time”, according to the Drainage Services Department.

In a bid to mitigate the damage and lessen the impact on nearby waters, an “additional disinfection process” has been implemented for the primary treated sewage before it’s discharged nearshore, the statement read.
