A 46-year-old construction worker has been jailed for six weeks after allowing the 10-year-old son of his girlfriend to drive a car, which the child, perhaps unsurprisingly, crashed into another vehicle.

According to Apple Daily, the man, Tse Kwok-yau, was sitting in the front passenger seat of the car as the boy took the wheel on the fourth floor of a multistory car park on Castle Peak Road in Tsuen Wan.

The young’un, being 10-years-old and all, wasn’t super great at navigating the enclosed space and smashed into the front of a parked car.

The incident took place on the evening of February 4. The boy left the scene before police arrived, reported Apple Daily.

Tse later confessed to officers that the 10-year-old had been behind the wheel.

At an earlier hearing, Tse pleaded guilty to four charges, including permitting another person to drive without a license and without third-party insurance. His car was also in a poor condition, with faulty brakes and rear lights, the court heard.

At his sentencing at Shatin Magistrates’ Court yesterday, a judge called his offending “serious”, noting he’d placed himself and his partner’s son in danger.

As well as a six-week jail term, he was fined HK$2,000 (US$255), and had his licence suspended for 12 months.

According to the SCMP, Tse said he had learned it had been wrong for him to relent and allow the child to drive after his repeated requests to take the wheel.

Nice to know #parenting.

As for the boy, who was not named for legal reasons, he was cautioned by police for careless driving and driving without a license or without third-party insurance, wrote The Standard.
