Anglican reverend likens Hong Kong to a cat: Behave well if you want freedom

In the latest controversial remarks made by members of the Hong Kong Anglican Church clergy, Reverend Peter Koon, the church’s secretary general, likened Hong Kong to a cat and Beijing to its owner, suggesting that the city needs to behave well to gain its freedom, reports Apple Daily.

Koon made the comment during a segment on Commercial Radio, when he brought up his own (we imagine very successful) cat-owning experience.

“Through my interactions with [my cat], I realized that if he behaved well, I would give him more space to himself,” Koon said.

Koon apparently also thought that universal suffrage is defined by the simple criterion of “one man, one vote,” and said that the city shouldn’t elect a chief executive who would further isolate Hong Kong from Beijing. He then expressed his support for the current government’s direction, citing that CY Leung is already under a lot of pressure.

The church was previously under fire for remarks made by the Most Reverend Dr. Paul Kwong, who said last year in a sermon that many who joined the July 1 march were showing “herd mentality.”

Kwong also sarcastically asked why the attendees of the march did not bring their helpers with them. The church later said that these comments were taken out of context.

Reverend Chu Yiu-ming, chairman of the Hong Kong Democracy Development Network, criticized Koon for his analogy. Chu cited the Book of Genesis, which described God giving humankind responsibility over the environment and other animals.

“I don’t understand how [Hongkongers] have suddenly turned into animals,” Chu said.

In response to the analogy, we only have one thing to say: We can haz cheezburger?
