Alleged shoplifter collapses after fleeing from security guard, dies 1 day later

Police are investigating the sudden death of a 48-year-old woman who was arrested for alleged shoplifting at a Kowloon Bay shopping centre on Tuesday evening.

According to Apple Daily, a security guard at the Marks & Spencer in Telford Plaza caught the woman, surnamed Yau, leaving the shop without paying for two jumpers worth HKD1,200. Upon the discovery, Yau attempted to run away, but was quickly apprehended by guards.

However, Yau suddenly collapsed after being caught, and was unconscious when police arrived. Officers arrested her on suspicion of theft and sent her to United Christian Hospital, where she regained consciousness at 3am on Wednesday.

Yau’s husband posted her bail on Wednesday morning, but she was kept at the hospital after falling unconscious again. She was certified dead that afternoon.

Officers from the Sau Mau Ping District Crime Squad are investigating the case. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death, but police told HK01 that they wouldn’t rule out the possibility of disease, as Yau had a history of anaemia and pneumonia, or sudden death.
