Even in a city of outrageously tiny apartments marketed for extortionate prices, this 56sq ft room in Tseung Kwan O is something else.

The bedroom, contained within sub-divided at a private housing estate called The Grandiose, has just been put up for rent.

The price? HK$7,000 (US$892) per month — making it more expensive, per square foot, than a luxury flat on The Peak.

The room, according to Apple Daily, is actually a bedroom in a 670sq ft unit which, as a whole, costs about HK$24,000 (US$3,100) per month to rent, based the price of similar flats.

However, instead of renting out the entire flat, the landlord decided to lease out each of the rooms — two 56sq ft bedrooms and a 110 sq ft master bedroom — individually, leaving the apartment’s living room and dining room as communal spaces.

A monthly rent of HK$7,000 means that each square foot in one of the shoebox rooms is worth about HK$125 (US$16.)

For comparison, a 4,289sq ft apartment in Mount Nicholson — a luxury housing development on The Peak — was rented out for a hefty HK$500,000 (US$64,000), but each square foot was only HK$117 (US$15.)

According to the newspaper no cooking is allowed (the photos don’t include a picture of a kitchen anyway) and only female tenants will be considered. Utilities also aren’t included in the rent.

And of course, people have jumped at the opportunity.

According to Apple Daily, one of small rooms was just taken and the master bedroom is occupied. The tiny box room is still available.

For those of you wondering if this Tseung Kwan O apartment is more expensive than other notable apartments in the news, here’s a rundown.

The 40sq ft shoebox room in Yau Ma Tei where the sofa chair and bed was placed next to the toilet was available to rent for HK$2,900 (US$369) per month. This means that each square foot in that apartment would have cost about HK$73 (US$9).

Recently a 700sq ft apartment in Kennedy Town where the toilet and shower are in the bedroom was on the market for HK$17,000 (US$2,166) per month, that’s HK$24 (US$3) per square foot.
