5 Hongkongers still missing following Nepal earthquake, 19 confirmed safe

The Hong Kong Immigration Department is still unsure of the whereabouts of five Hongkongers following the 7.9-magnitude earthquake that devastated Nepal and triggered avalanches on Mount Everest on Saturday.

The department said that 19 Hongkongers have been located, though some sustained minor injuries in the disaster.

Among the rescued is school teacher Ada Tsang, who was at the Everest base camp when the quake rocked the country. Her students have set up a Facebook page confirming her safety.

Tsang was actually slated to make the trek to the summit last April but her trip had to be cut short when another avalanche, then the deadliest on record, killed 16 sherpa guides.

Another trekker, John Tsang (no relation) was also on Mount Everest when the quake hit on Saturday. Tsang told the SCMP that he heard a loud noise and then found shelter from the avalanche in a dining tent. The avalanche killed at least 18 people. Tsang stayed behind to help the rescue efforts on the mountain.

Hongkonger Fred Bowers is trapped higher up the mountain but is safe. He and his group are waiting for the right time to go down the mountain.

Friends of Discovery Bay domestic helper Liza Avelino also confirmed her safety.

Officials have so far tallied the casualties from the massive earthquake to more than 3,300 dead and 6,500 injured.
