2-year-old boy dies while parents are at work, domestic helper arrested on suspicion of murder

A 22-year-old domestic helper has been arrested on suspicion of the alleged murder of a two-year-old boy in her care while his parents were at work.

The child’s parents left their Tin Shui Wai home at around 8am yesterday but became suspicious when their home surveillance camera stopped working around an hour later, Apple Daily reports.

In addition, the family’s domestic helper allegedly failed to telephone the parents with an update on their son, which she did regularly. The boy’s father reportedly asked a neighbour to check if everything was alright, but the neighbour said nobody answered the door.

Alarmed, the boy’s parents rushed home at noon to find their son unconscious in bed and their domestic helper missing.

They brought the child to Tuen Mun Hospital, where he was declared dead at 12:33pm. He had no apparent injuries, but investigators found blood in his nose, according to the SCMP.

An autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of death.

Police found the family’s helper walking around Lau Fau Shan later that afternoon and took her into custody. She was detained at the police station overnight and interrogated until this morning, when police arrested her on suspicion of murder.

The 22-year-old was hired seven months ago. She and the family, who are both Indian, had reportedly got on well.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article has been updated with a more precise time of death.
