An elderly man and woman were hospitalised yesterday after they were injured on an escalator in Kwai Chung.
At around 10am, the pair were taking an ascending escalator from the ground floor of Shek Lei Market when the machine suddenly stopped, causing them to tumble backwards, Bastille Post reports. Luckily, two young girls who were also riding the escalator stopped the man and woman from falling to the bottom.
The pair sustained injuries to their limbs and were sent to hospital for treatment. An investigation into the accident is underway.
On Saturday, a 45-metre-long escalator in Langham Place shopping centre suddenly stopped and reversed in high speed, causing riders to lose balance and pile up at the bottom. A total of 18 people were injured, with one man sustaining serious head injuries. Two mechanics from Otis Elevators (Hong Kong), the service contractor for the escalator, were later arrested on suspicion of tampering with the escalator during a police investigation.
On Monday, two escalators in different districts began emitting smoke. The incidents, which took place near Tseung Kwan O MTR Station and inside Lam Tin MTR Station, respectively, were hours apart. The escalator in Lam Tin is also managed by Otis. No injuries were reported.
