A 19-year-old female high school student died in hospital yesterday morning, just days after she was hit by a minibus in North Point.

Wong Mei-gwai was crossing King’s Road just after 10am on Friday morning when she was hit by a green-topped minibus and trapped underneath its wheels.

She died yesterday at 11am at the Intensive Care Unit at Queen Mary’s Hospital, HK01 reported.

Wong, a secondary six student at Man Kiu College in North Point, was preparing for the city’s university entrance exams, the Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE).

A teacher at the college surnamed Wong — no relation to the deceased — told HK01 that although school was out for summer vacation, the deceased and her friends used their time off to go back to school and study.

He described Wong as a very diligent and hard-working student who took part in a number of extracurricular activities, including a jewellery design competition for high school students, and an open dance competition.

He told the website that many teachers from the school accompanied the family to the hospital at 8am yesterday morning.

HK01 also posted a photo of a notice issued by the school to students and teachers informing them of Wong’s death, and that psychologists, teachers, and school social workers are available to provide support to those who have been affected by Wong’s death.

A 46-year-old minibus driver surnamed Cheung was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm.

A police spokesperson told Coconuts HK that he is currently out on bail, and is due to return to the police station in August.
