The mother of a 10-year-old boy who was spotted walking around a market in Yuen Long naked was arrested Thursday for alleged child abuse.
The boy, who lives with his mother nearby, ran downstairs to Tung Lok Street without any clothes on and with just one slipper after his mother hit him with a USB cable, according to HK01.
A market vendor, seeing the boy stark naked, gave him a towel to wrap around his lower body.
When his mother, 47, later went downstairs, she was berated by passersby who accused her of abusing her son.
The woman responded calmly that she simply asked her son to shower and put on clothes.
The boy reportedly studies at a special needs school and lives with his mother in a unit above the market.
According to local media, the mother scolded his son at home because he only put on a top after showering.
When his mother yelled that he “may as well not wear anything,” the boy retaliated by taking off his t-shirt and running out of the house.
Redness on the boy, which passersby earlier called evidence of abuse, were found to be eczema marks. But the mother did admit to striking his son with a cable, causing injury to his leg.
The boy was sent to Pok Oi Hospital before being transferred to Tuen Mun Hospital.
HK01 reported that his mother is a single parent. She is frequently seen around the market picking up cardboard and styrofoam boxes, and taking up cleaning work.
Police are investigating the incident.
