Flagrantly ignoring the residents only sign, a couple of primates were spotted enjoying a veritable summertime pool party at a luxury housing estate in the New Territories this week.

Video sent to Apple Daily by a female resident surnamed Hung shows at least 10 monkeys having a dip in the pool of Scenery Garden, a private housing estate in Fo Tan close to the Shing Mun Reservoir, which is a habitat for the city’s macaque monkeys.

Hung told the newspaper she saw the monkeys frolicking about at 7am on Thursday morning, with the troupe splitting their time between diving into the adult pool and splashing about in the kiddy area.

Apple Daily also interviewed pedestrian walking nearby, who told the newspaper that he often sees monkeys crossing the road and diving into the pool at dusk.

A general practitioner told the newspaper that monkeys carry bacteria like E. coli and enterococcus because they often scavenge for food from trash cans.

He suggested that the housing estate close the pool temporarily so that it can be disinfected.

The management office for the Scenery Garden Estate told Apple Daily that they were aware monkeys have been swimming in the pool for the last two days, and are carrying out measures such as covering the pool with nets so that monkeys don’t dive in.

This is not the first time monkeys have been caught causing a nuisance in the area.

In March, residents from a housing estate in Sha Tin — one MTR stop away from Fo Tan — posted photos online of monkeys breaking into their apartments and wreaking havoc on their kitchens.
