Friday, September 21

German Film Forum: Who Am I – No System Is Safe

This event is hosted by the Goethe-Institut of Hong Kong as part of their German Film Forum, and just more than a week away from their German film festival for Hong Kong and Macau, KINO 18. The film on show at this event centers on a lonely computer expert called Benjamin who meets three other men and together they form a subversive hacker group, but things turn from fun to dangerous when it emerges that the are being investigated by German Secret Service and Europol.

TakeOut Comedy Presents Pablo Francisco

If you’re looking for something a little less heavy to start the weekend with, how about a bit of standup comedy? US comedian Pablo Francisco will be making his Hong Kong debut this weekend, and has been described as one of the most popular touring comedians worldwide. With an uncanny ability to weave together off the wall characters and spot-on impressions, Francisco is guaranteed to be one of the funniest comedians you will see on stage.

9pm to 11pm. Takeout Comedy Club, 34 Elgin Street, Soho, Central. HK$588.

The Composer is Dead!

The Hong Kong Philharmonic will be presenting this introductory guide to all the instruments in an orchestra, but as a murder mystery and features music from the Pink Panther and Sherlock Holmes. There will also be a Hong Kong premiere of US composer Nathaniel Stookey’s The Composer is Dead. This event features English narration with Chinese surtitles.

Saturday, September 22

Vivek Mahbubani – Comedy Workshop

If you ever thought about pursuing stand-up comedy but need a bit of help, try this comedy workshop hosted by Hong Kong-bred bilingual stand-up comedian Vivek Mahbubani, who was crowned the funniest comedian in Hong Kong for the Chinese and English categories at the Hong Kong International Comedy Competition in 2007 and 2008 respectively.

IRIS: Your Escape

The seventh edition of Hong Kong’s largest health and wellness festival presented by ManulifeMOVE, will take place on 22-23 September 2018 at Central Harbourfront. The two-day event features more than 80 yoga and fitness classes, as well as music, live performances, fun-filled workshops, activities and talks.

The Other Story – an exhibition curated by Ying Kwok

This exhibition features works by artists Tsang Chui mei, Tsang Tsui Shan, and Chloë Cheuk, who invite guests to think less about the subject matter or theme, and more about how their art is made and the relationship between the artist and the materials chosen.

Tangyuan Making Workshop

The Mid-Autumn Festival is almost here, and for Hongkongers, that normally means mooncakes and glutinous rice balls known as tangyuan. Before the festival arrives, PMQ’s Taste Library will be holding a workshop — that will be conducted mainly in Cantonese — on how to make this traditional treat, and those taking part will be able to take their hard work home.

South Island Art Day

With 13 art spaces to go to in the Wong Chuk Hang and Tin Wan areas, there’s plenty for the kids to do at the South Island Art Day. There will be exhibition openings, performance art, contemporary dance, installations and street art in this family-friendly event. There will also be complementary food and beverage and a Kid’s Corner for people to unleash their creative side.

Sunday, September 23

Annual Tai Hai Fire Dragon Dance Festival

Every year during the Mid-Autumn festival, people in Tai Hang take part in the annual ritual the fire dragon dance, which features a 67-meter dragon with 72,000 incense sticks, and held up by 300 performers. Legend has it that the people of Tai Hang village miraculously stopped a plague with a fire dragon dance in the 19th century. Since then, the ritual has become a yearly tradition attended by hundreds, and has since become part of China’s official intangible cultural heritage,

Two Nights at Alvy’s

Kennedy Town pizza bar Alvy’s will be celebrating mid-autumn festival — and the three-day weekend — with four special beers going on tap. Beers on tap include a Manhattan Scotch ale called One Night at Alvy’s, an IPA called Fake Juice, a “Not so Classic” pale ale, and a sour ale called Days of Being Wild-Pomegranate brewed by Hong Kong’s very own Young Master’s.
