Make way for the queen of the desert from down under! Yes, you read it right, PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT, THE MUSICAL is coming to Hong Kong this September.
This raucous party is the most fun you’ll have in a theater. The New York Post calls it “a feel-good show with a big joyous heart”, while The Daily Telegraph says it’s “hugely entertaining…insanely glitzy”, and The Herald Sun Australia calls the musical “vivid, daring and over-the-top”.
Now it’s time for Hong Kong to fall under the spell of the magical costumes, magnetic performances and all around extra experience. Priscilla is opening her sparkling pink doors (because she’s a bus, silly) to Hongkongers on September 29th, 2017 and due to overwhelming demand, the production is adding an extra eight shows. Fabulous!
Now a little background info for those who haven’t seen the Oscar award-winning movie The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994). (If you haven’t, please do indulge yourself in this awesome indie flick one night.)
PRISCILLA QUEEN OF THE DESERT, THE MUSICAL is a heart-warming and uplifting tale of two drag queens, Tick and Adam, and a transgender woman, Bernadette, who hop aboard a battered old bus, to which they give the iconic name Priscilla. The trio of quirky characters set off from Sydney on the adventure of a lifetime, to perform as drag artists at a casino in the heart of the Aussie outback. They end up on a journey of self-discovery, finding friendship, acceptance, love and far more than they ever dreamed of.
It’s heartwarming, entertaining and best of all its credited with bringing the LGBTQ perspective to mainstream Australian (and international) audiences at a time when we weren’t as woke as we are now, aka the 90’s.
The spectacular show utilizes 23 tonnes of glitzy, glam scenery, three pop divas with knock-out voices and hilarious personalities, and a 10 meter long bus. Priscilla, customized with pure fabulousness, weighs in at a massive six tonnes, making it THE sparkling centerpiece.
The stage is awash with a glittering array of over 500 outrageous and colorful costumes as well as 200 extraordinary headdresses; there are sequins galore, feathers, faux fur, leather, sparkling spandex, platform boots and even a show-stopping giant shoe encrusted in no fewer than 2,500 glittering crystals!
The flamboyant, funny, disco-fueled musical is full of well-known pop songs guaranteed to get you up on your feet. Get ready to dance to It’s Raining Men, I Will Survive, Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, Go West, Hot Stuff, Boogie Wonderland, Thank God I’m A Country Boy, Say A Little Prayer, and more. Because, let’s be real, who can stay still when It’s Raining Men or I Will Survive is blasting? Not us!
