We’re not going to sugarcoat it: this has been an awful week. Between Beijing’s unprecedented intervention in Hong Kong law and the dumpster fire that is the US election, it’s been a nailbiter.
So we’re glad to have some light distraction in the form of the latest Michelin Guide to Hong Kong and Macau, and happy to see some beloved establishments being recognised.
Two Cantonese restaurants got their first ever stars: Spring Moon in the Peninsula, one of the oldest restaurants in the city, and Yat Tung Heen at the Eaton Hotel in Jordan.
The two Japanese restaurants that received their first Michelin stars were IM Teppanyaki & Wine in Tai Hang and Sushi Tokami in Harbour City, a Hong Kong branch of the Tokyo restaurant of the same name which opened late last year.
Épure, also in Harbour City, was awarded its first star for its contemporary French fare, as was the 11-month-old local branch of Beefbar, a steakhouse chain from Monte Carlo.
VEA Lounge by the unstoppable young chef Vicky Cheng and star mixologist Antonio Lai got its first star in the “innovative” category just one year after opening, to the delight of many livestreaming the awards ceremony online.
Also in the “innovative” category, Japanese-French restaurant Ta Vie was upgraded from its one-star ranking in last year’s edition to two stars this year.
The eighth and final Hong Kong restaurant making its Michelin guide debut is Japanese kaiseki eatery Kashiwaya, earning not one, but two stars just one year after opening.
