Shakespeare in the Port, Hong Kong’s first outdoor Shakespeare festival, is a chance for people of all ages and backgrounds to appreciate the masterpieces of Shakespeare like never before.

Produced by Meaghan McGurgan, an award-winning director and designer from the US, the festival hopes to bring an accessible and entertaining Shakespearean experience to Hongkongers.

The whole cast and crew is formed by artists that work in Hong Kong, “We’re passionate about creating a homegrown festival that shows the talent of the Hong Kong scene. There’s this preconception that art made in Hong Kong isn’t as good as a tour shipped in from abroad. With Shakespeare in the Port we hope to show audiences the potential of Hong Kong art and change the perception of what a local artist is,” Meaghan said.

The ticket price is affordable and reasonable, HK$150 for a weekday pass that lets you watch one show, HK$300 for a weekend pass that lets you watch three shows. Kids under 12 can enter the festival for free when accompanied by an adult with a purchased ticket. Meaghan believes that theatre is important to children as “it provides kids an opportunity to express themselves and tell their stories in new and inventive ways.”

The festival started on Apr. 17 and will last until May 4 – audiences can BYOB and snacks as well as blankets to get comfortable at Cyberport Podium. The two main stage shows are The Tragedy of Miss Julius Caesar and The Taming of Shrew. During the weekends you can take advantage of the free workshops covering topics on arts and literature.
