New market goer’s favorite: Train Night Market Ratchada

An old face is the new frontier for shopping and hanging out on those sultry Bangkok nights.

The Train Night Market Ratchada, also known as Talad Nud Rod Fai, is a new offering from the people behind the venerable Train Night Market in Srinakarin, but the new branch is only a two-minute walk from the MRT.

Located right behind Esplanade Cineplex on the busy Ratchadapisek Road, the Train Night Market Ratchada became crowded with market goers since it opened last month. Although Bangkok hosts flea markets almost every weekend around town, the Train Market’s legacy is maintained with a guarantee of great food and a variety of stuff you can find good deals on.

Although it’s smaller than the one at Srinakarin and the Siam Gypsy Market (aka JJ Green), this new market still takes an hour to explore. It’s divided into familiar zones: food, bars, shopping and activities.

The summer heat isn’t a bother for shoppers as the market runs from 5pm to 1am every Thursday through Sunday. The peak time is on Friday and Saturday nights. With the success it’s enjoyed in its first month, organizers plan to stage a Car Boot Sale Tuesday and Wednesday nights for those with unusual work schedules or who simply like to shop.

Three sois (alley) of food zones offer everything from spicy somtam to homemade mini pizzas and cheap sushi. The highlights are Noodle Jompalang (gigantic bowl of noodle) and Midnight Pangyen (shaved ice with toppings of your choice), which are familiar fare for veterans of the Srinakarin branch. It’s impossible to leave the market hungry, even if you’re hungry for fried insects, because stalls sell that too.

From second-hand vintage clothes to new trendy accessories such as stone bead bracelets, most everything is priced affordably. Vintage and antique goods offer nostalgic turns with all the vintage toys from childhood memories. The must-shop for market-goers are the cool T-shirts, vintage and handmade shoes, eyeglasses, hats and more. They’re also up for some bargaining.

Beside shopping, you can get a haircut in “vintage street” style at The Silvercut Barbershop. Small cozy bar and coffee stalls are also available to refresh at the back of the market to make the night more lively.
