Woman abused on Facebook Live says drug-crazed boyfriend believed he was the Joker

In a case that has received international attention, the young Thai woman who was abused by her boyfriend on Facebook Live on Sunday told police her abuser had been under the drug-induced hallucination that he was the Joker, the sadistic villain from the Batman comics.

According to police, the victim, identified as 21-year-old Nita, had been beaten six times over her eight-month relationship with Chaichana Sirichart, 25, who is now in police custody and facing charges for the abuse, Nation TV reported.

Nita claimed that Chaichana was a habitual drugs user and that it was not the first time he’d envisioned himself as the Joker. On Sunday, he accused her of having cheated on him with three different men, something she said was a paranoid delusion.

Sunday’s vicious abuse lasted for 6-8 hours before police were alerted of the disturbing live stream and rescued her, according to Police Spokesman Pol. Gen. Wirachai Songmetta.

“Chaichana has physically abused his girlfriend six times. In the latest abuse, he hurt her for 6-8 hours with different methods such as burning her with a hair straightener, attempting to cut her throat with a knife, beating her with a tripod, electrocuting her with unsealed wires… and even attempting to gouge out her eyes,” Pol. Gen. Wirachai told reporters yesterday.

“The reason the victim put up with the abuse is that she loved him very much,” the police spokesman added.

Somboon Todbaworn, director of Nopparat Ratchathani Hospital, said that Nita’s eyes remain shut from the swelling and she still can’t see. Her neck has a wound that resembles a knife cut. Her left arm, left hand, and nose were broken.

The doctor also found bruises all over her body, many of predated Sunday’s abuse, as well as burns across her legs and arms.

Yesterday, Chaichana was charged with attempted murder, in addition to bodily harm, abduction, and a computer crime violation. No family or friends of the 25-year-old showed up to ask for bail as he was transferred to the Bangkok Remand Prison, according to INN.

In a rambling session on Monday, Chaichana seemed to have a near breakdown while telling reporters that he still loves his girlfriend very much.

“I really showed her that I was angry,” he said.

“I’d like to say one thing. When I did it [hit the victim], I was angry,” he said, mimicking the hitting.

“Why did you lie?! Why did you lie to me? You slept with them,” he cried.

“I still love her…I love her very much,” he said as he was dragged back into the cell.

Swindling THB6 million

Chaichana’s legal woes extend beyond the domestic abuse. The 25-year-old specialized in Forex trading and is an admin of Facebook page “Global FX Investment”. He allegedly lured about 500 people to pay THB15,000 each in order to attend his Forex teaching course, which was never held. Police are preparing to charge him with fraud, as a group of victims filed a police report yesterday, Bangkok Post reported.

One of the victims, who requested anonymity, said that Chaichana promised a one-on-one training session, including video clips offered insights on the Forex market.

Police encouraged all victims to come forward and file their complaints.
