The new motorbike umbrellas appearing on Thai roads this rainy season seem like a brilliant idea but one official says they are dangerous to the driver and those that share the road with them.

The shields, which are available on both Lazada and Alibaba, come in a few different variations. Some are like giant clear garment bags and cover the entire bike, while others look like oval umbrellas that simply attach to the frame of the bike. Still other, like the one above, are called canopies and arch over the bike to keep the rider dry.

In a country where most people get around by bike and it rains like crazy for four months of the year, they seem to make perfect sense. However, they could provide sight obstacles to drivers.

Department of Land Transport Chief Sanit Phromwong said that his department is probably going to ask drivers using these rain shields to remove them, reported The Nation.

He said that the umbrellas are unstable and can cause an accident if they move or fall as well as affecting visibility.
