The Thai Meteorological Department denied that a heat wave is going to hit Bangkok next week, as has been widely reported.

It was rumored on Thai social media that we were going to get scorched from March 20-22.

However, the department announced yesterday that it’s not a true heat wave. The weather scheduled for next week will bump the temperature up a bit but it’s part of an annual weather pattern called the Equinox phenomenon, which happens every year on March 20 or March 21 and may push the temperature past the 40 degrees Celsius mark for a few days, reported Thai PBS.

Technically, to qualify as a heat wave, temperatures have to be an average of 5 degrees Celsius higher than normal for five days in a row.

The department also said that the hottest period for this summer will happen in late April and early May and that the weather won’t be hotter than last year.
