Like to watch? Citizens to have access to city street CCTV footage

As of Monday, residents will be able to watch and obtain footage from all Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s surveillance cameras at 12 locations around the city if they suspect a crime or suspicious activity on city streets.

Government workers will man at the stations 24-hours-per-day in three separate shifts so that crime victims can view many recordings immediately after a crime takes place.

Until now, it was only possible for residents to watch CCTV footage at City Hall in Phra Nakhon.

The government hopes that the new centers will make it easier for people to view the footage. The CCTV recordings will be viewable in district offices in Chatuchak, Bang Khen, Huay Khwang, Ratchathewi, Phra Khanong, Bang Kho Laem, Min Buri, Bung Kum, Bang Phlat, Bang Bon and Rat Burana, reported Bangkok Post.

The BMA has 53,429 CCTV cameras installed around the city. That number does not account for all the private cameras that citizens have to protect their homes and businesses. There are also 30,000 cameras that are not linked to the main system. To view that footage, those requesting it will need to wait about three days after placing the request.
