More than 200 people were evacuated from their homes after flames ripped through their neighborhood in Bangkok’s Samre area last night.

Residents forced from their homes took shelter at nearby wats Samakkhi and Santi Thammaram after the blaze spread in Soi Taksin 23. Fire suppression teams from nearby Talat Phlu arrived at about 8:30pm and took two hours to bring the fire under control.

Three people were injured and 76 residences damaged, but no fatalities were reported.

Samre police told Coconuts Bangkok they are investigating the cause of the fire, which started in a single-family residence. The home’s owner told reporters she was downstairs with her family when she heard an explosion-like sound from upstairs and discovered the fire. The middle-aged woman, who was not identified by name, suffered burns to her right arm and forehead. She said she did not know what caused the fire.

The flames spread quickly through the older, wooden shophouses packed tightly on the narrow road. The rescue team had to take about 40 minutes before they could access the site.

City Hall spokesman Pongsakorn Kwanmuang said today that local police would accept property damage complaints. He said the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation office would provide each family THB5,000, a “survival kit” with another THB33,000 considered for those whose homes burned down.

More than 100 homes were damaged or destroyed just two years ago in the same area.
