Trees in Dusit armed with metal bars after City Hall destroyed their roots to build walkway

After City Hall damaged trees on Rama V Road by digging up their roots while building a new walkway in May, they have come up with what they consider a solution to their mistake — just prop the weak trees up with metal structures.

This week, Big Trees, an organization that conserves trees and green spaces, shared photos of City Hall’s new metal bars, put in place to support each tree after a recent storm reportedly knocked some of them down. The trees are very weak because they have compromised root systems.

The project, started in May, aimed to build a sidewalk on top of the tree roots. However, it was poorly planned and widely criticized by residents, including famous architect Duangrit Bunnag who wrote on Facebook that the sidewalk was a “design without common sense.”

Photos of the trees’ damaged roots were widely shared online and caused outrage among netizens.
