Tipsy Teens: Officials meet to brainstorm how to curb student boozing

ThaiHealth had a meeting to brainstorm ideas about how to lower the number of new drinkers after shocking reports stated that booze sales around university campuses are still staggeringly high.

There is a ban on alcohol sales within 300 meters of university campuses, but it’s often ignored.

Attendees of the 9th National Alcohol Conference focused this year on curbing student drinking.

They pondered the results of surveys from 15 universities across the country, these all stated that alcohol sales were still being made very close to schools. They also heard that drinking among secondary school students was on the rise, reported Thai News Bureau.

The current drinking age in Thailand is 20, but it was 18 for so long that the newer age limit is not often enforced. They floated the idea of enforcing it more strictly. They also discussed banning booze ads near schools and increasing alcohol taxes to discourage poor, young students from catching an after-class buzz.
