Thammasat gardener arrested over gunning down colleague

Cops have detained a Thammasat University gardener after he allegedly gunned down his colleague this morning.

Somnuek Kaewtham, 55, shot the university administrative official in front of several onlookers on the Rangsit campus after a heated argument, then fled the scene on a motorbike, Khaosod English reported.

The victim was identified as Amnart Niyomsakdi, 58, who worked in the disabled student affairs department. He died en route to the hospital.

The pair were enemies for a long time, police said, and they had argued this morning just before the shooting.

Police arrested Somnuek this afternoon. He is in custody but has not yet been charged.

Thammasat University assistant rector Chanan Phonprapai told Khaosod English the university banned firearms on campus and would consider tightening security following the shooting.

“We never expected this. It’s unprecedented,” he said. “It’s already very, very rare for our staff to have fights, let alone kill each other.”
